1. How do I become a volunteer firefighter?

3. Are fireworks allowed in the City of Eudora?

Per Eudora City Code, fireworks may be discharged within the city limits during the following times only:

July 1st & 2nd: 10 AM - 10 PM

July 3rd & 4th: 10 AM - 11:30 PM

(a)   It shall be unlawful for any person to discharge or fire off any fireworks of any kind within the city limits of the City of Eudora, Kansas. Provided, however, that nothing within this section shall be construed as prohibiting the governing body of the City of Eudora, Kansas, from giving pyrotechnical displays or from granting permission to responsible persons, firms, or corporations to give pyrotechnical displays in places to be designated by the governing body within the city limits of the City of Eudora, Kansas.

(b)   Provided, also, that subsection (a) of this section shall not apply to the discharge of fireworks, as authorized under state law, on the 1st and 2nd days of July, each year, between the hours of 10:00 o’clock a.m. and 10:00 o’clock p.m.; and on the 3rd and 4th day of July, each year, between the hours of 10:00 o’clock a.m. and 11:30 o’clock p.m. However, it shall be unlawful for any person to discharge, fire off, or explode any bottle rocket, as defined at K.S.A. 31-155, within the city limits of the City of Eudora, Kansas, at any time.

(c) It is unlawful for any person to discharge, fire off, or explode any fireworks of any kind on City owned property at any time, including parks, property surrounding municipal buildings, and vacant land owned by the City. Furthermore, the City of Eudora, Kansas adopts Chapter 22, Article 6, Section 9 of the State Fire Marshal regulations, that states:
1.  A person shall not ignite or discharge fireworks into, under, or from a car or vehicle, whether moving or standing still, or on a public roadway or the right-of-way adjoining a public roadway.         

  2.  Fireworks shall not be discharged within 100 feet of any "place of institution," as defined by national fire protection association standard no. 101, which is adopted by reference in K.A.R. 22-1-3, or any retail fireworks stand or facility where fireworks are stored. (Authorized by and implementing K.S.A. 2007 Supp. 31-133; effective Jan. 1, 1973; amended May 1, 1986; amended Dec. 29, 2008.)

4. How often should I change the battery in my smoke detector?

We recommend the battery in smoke detectors be changed twice a year, once in the spring and once in the fall. At a minimum, smoke detector batteries should be replaced annually. Detectors should also be checked monthly to be sure the audible alarm is operating properly.

5. Do I need a carbon monoxide detector?

If your home has any gas-fired or wood burning appliances (cook stove, water heater, furnace, fireplace, etc.) or has an attached garage, a carbon monoxide detector is required. Generally, the carbon monoxide detector should be installed in a central location so the occupants can hear it. Carbon monoxide detectors should not be installed inside a furnace room.

6. How often should I replace my carbon monoxide detector and batteries?

We recommend that you replace your Carbon Monoxide (CO) detector every five to seven years from the date of manufacture, which can usually be located on the back of your CO detector. We recommend that you replace the batteries annually.

7. How can I schedule a fire station tour?

The City of Eudora Fire Department provides fire station tours for various community groups and residents on a scheduled basis.

8. What regulations apply to recreational fires?

The size of the fire must be limited to a three foot diameter and must be at least 25 feet from any building or combustible structure such as decks or fences. Only wood may be burned, no brush, yard waste or treated wood may be burned. No rubbish can be burned at any time.

9. How can I schedule a car seat safety inspection?

Douglas County Safe Kids offers free car seat safety inspections to residents for car seats of all sizes. Car seat inspections are usually held on the first Saturday of the month at the Eudora Fire Station, these are by appointment only.

10. Should I have a fire extinguisher in my home and what type should I purchase?

We recommend you keep at least one fire extinguisher in your home, preferably one extinguisher per level. A fire extinguisher should be placed in your kitchen near cooking appliances in case of emergencies. An extinguisher should also be available in the garage area or where mechanical rooms (furnace, water heater, electrical panel) are located.

11. How can I report a fire hazard?

To report a possible fire hazard, you may contact the City of Eudora Fire Department Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 785-542-3653. This is not an EMERGENCY number that is answered 24 hours. For an EMERGENCY, call 911.
